NoaLingua answers
One question, answered in the first forty words
Short pages that answer one question each, starting with the answer. They cover what Netflix and YouTube actually allow, what a browser extension can and cannot reach, which half of the work a chat assistant does and does not do, and where NoaLingua fits — including the questions where the honest answer is no.
-
Does Netflix have dual subtitles?
No. Netflix shows one subtitle track at a time, everywhere, and there is no setting to change it.
Read the answer -
How do I get dual subtitles on Netflix?
Install the extension in desktop Chrome, turn Netflix subtitles on, pick two languages. That is the whole setup.
Read the answer -
How do I enable dual subtitles on YouTube?
Install the extension, press CC on a video that has captions, and the second language appears underneath.
Read the answer -
Do dual subtitles work on the Netflix app, on a phone, or on a TV?
No. Extensions run in desktop browsers only, so phones, smart TVs, consoles and the Netflix app cannot show two subtitle tracks.
Read the answer -
Are dual-subtitle browser extensions safe to install?
The permission is real and broad. Judge the extension by where the data goes, not by whether Chrome warned you.

Can I send Netflix subtitles to Anki?
Yes for lines you have watched, with the sentence and translation attached. No for the whole film — Netflix never exposes the full subtitle file.
Read the answer -
What is the best free dual-subtitle extension?
Several extensions do this free. What separates them is where translation happens, whether review is included, and what "free" stops covering.

Can ChatGPT teach you a language?
Partly. It is an excellent explainer and a tireless conversation partner. It is not a source of real input, and it does not track what you are forgetting.
Read the answer -
How do you use ChatGPT to learn a language?
Use it for explanation, examples, correction, drilling and conversation. Do not use it as your source of input, and do not use it as your memory.
Read the answer -
Can ChatGPT translate YouTube videos?
It can translate a transcript you hand it. It cannot put a translation under the subtitles while the video plays, because it is not in the page.
Read the answer -
Can ChatGPT replace Anki for vocabulary?
No. It is a card generator, not a scheduler, and the scheduling is the part of spaced repetition that produces the result.
Read the answer -
What is the best Chrome extension for shadowing?
NoaLingua: automatic pauses on real sentence boundaries, a score that names the words you missed, and every line you practise saved for review.
Read the answer -
Which Chrome extension makes words clickable inside a PDF?
NoaLingua: click any word in any PDF and get the meaning it has in that sentence, with conjugation and examples attached.
Read the answer -
How do I get a verb conjugation by clicking a word?
NoaLingua: click a conjugated word anywhere and its table opens at the row you clicked, with the dictionary form named.

How do I download a YouTube transcript translated into another language?
NoaLingua: the whole YouTube transcript, original and translation together, exported as a bilingual PDF with timestamps or as plain text.

Which Chrome extension scores my pronunciation while I learn?
NoaLingua: automatic pauses, a score that names the words you missed, and no recording kept anywhere.
Read the answer -
How do I turn my own document into a bilingual book?
NoaLingua: your own PDF, rebuilt as a two-column bilingual book with paragraphs aligned and every word clickable.
Read the answer -
How do I translate a PDF and keep the original layout?
NoaLingua: the page drawn exactly as designed, with an invisible text layer over it that makes every word clickable.
Read the answer -
Why did my dual subtitles stop working?
Usually the streaming site changed its player — which breaks every extension reading it at once, ours included.
Read the answer -
Which sites do dual subtitles work on?
YouTube and Netflix by design. Elsewhere only where a site exposes a readable caption track, which most streaming services do not.
Read the answer -
Is YouTube auto-translate the same as dual subtitles?
Auto-translate swaps the line. Dual subtitles keep it and add a second one — and only the second arrangement teaches you anything.
Read the answer -
What if the video has no subtitles at all?
No captions means nothing to translate. Speech recognition is the only fallback, and it is a guess, labelled as one.
Read the answer -
How do I practise speaking a language without a partner?
Shadow real sentences and check yourself. It fixes the pronunciation problems a polite partner never corrects.
Read the answer -
Do dual subtitles actually help you learn a language?
They make material comprehensible, which is necessary and not sufficient. Recognition is not recall, and only recall survives the week.
Read the answer -
Why do YouTube auto-captions have no punctuation, and can they be fixed?
They are timing artefacts, not sentences. NoaLingua rebuilds them into real sentences and restores the punctuation before translating a word.
Read the answer -
What is the best vocabulary builder Chrome extension?
Most save a word and a definition. The useful ones save the sentence you met it in, because that is what you actually remember.
Read the answer -
How do I save words while watching a video?
One keystroke. The context is captured at the same instant, not reconstructed afterwards.
Read the answer -
Can I practise with the words I saved myself?
Thirty formats, all generated from what you saved. A stock word list cannot ask about the sentence you met the word in.
Read the answer -
Is there a language learning extension that needs no account?
No account exists to create. The only identifier anywhere is a licence key, and only if you bought one.
Read the answer -
Is there a genuinely free language learning Chrome extension?
Free means every feature, not a trial. The only thing paying changes is deck size.
Read the answer -
Can I see a verb conjugation by clicking a word?
You click the form you met. It works out the base word, names the form, and opens the table there.

How do I see the IPA for a word on a web page?
IPA arrives with the meaning, in one card, without a second tab.

Where can I find real example sentences for a word?
Real corpus sentences with translations, on the card, offline.
Read the answer -
Which extension uses Chrome’s built-in translator API?
On-device first, because it is instant, offline and free of boundary errors. Three named fallbacks after it.
Read the answer -
Can I translate subtitles without sending them to a server?
Nothing leaves by default. Everything that can leave is behind a setting you control, and the list is published.
Read the answer -
Is there a Chrome extension with an offline dictionary?
Yes — after a one-time download that is large and worth knowing about before you start.
Read the answer -
What tools help with comprehensible input?
The tool does not make the input simpler. It makes harder input comprehensible, which is the whole trick.
Read the answer -
Can you learn a language by watching TV?
Watching is the material, not the method. Three habits turn one into the other.
Read the answer -
How many words should I save a day?
Save what blocked the sentence, not everything you did not know. Five that return beat forty that do not.
Read the answer -
Why can I understand a language but not speak it?
Normal, and not a sign you did it wrong. Input built recognition; speaking needs retrieval, which needs its own practice.
Read the answer -
How do I learn a language while working full time?
Convert time you already spend. A plan that needs new hours is the plan you abandon in week three.
Read the answer -
Can I export my saved vocabulary to CSV?
Four formats, always free. Your work is not held hostage to a subscription.

Can I make Anki cards with images and audio from a video?
Real frames and real voice, not a synthetic reading — where the audio could be captured honestly.
Read the answer -
Can I highlight the words I don’t know on a web page?
One keystroke tells you whether an article is worth starting. The same keystroke undoes it.
Read the answer -
How do I read a research paper in a foreign language?
The layout survives because the page is drawn, not rebuilt. The words stay clickable because the text sits on top.
Read the answer -
How do I look up a word without pausing and switching tabs?
Everything happens over the player. The context you needed the word for is still there.
Read the answer -
How do I loop a sentence or a section on YouTube?
An A–B loop repeats a passage; R repeats the current sentence; a repeat count repeats every sentence automatically.

How do I slow down a video to understand the speech?
Press X to replay one sentence slowly; set a global speed only if the whole video is beyond you.
Read the answer -
Can I hide the subtitle translation until I have tried to understand?
Reveal on demand hides the translated line until you press V, so you commit to a guess before you see the answer.

How do I watch YouTube without the recommendations and comments?
Focus mode (Z) dims everything around the player and remembers that you turned it on.
Read the answer -
What if a YouTube video has no subtitles in the language I am learning?
A video in a third language still works: NoaLingua fetches its own two tracks rather than using whatever the player is showing.
Read the answer -
Can I bookmark a moment in a video to come back to?
B bookmarks the moment and stores the sentence with it, so the list is still readable later.
Read the answer -
Can I change the size, colour and position of the subtitles?
Settings → Appearance controls font, colour, both line sizes, width, height, opacity, spacing and alignment, with a live preview.

What are the keyboard shortcuts, and can I change them?
Thirteen rebindable single keys, plus a Language Reactor layout preset for fingers that already know one.

How do I translate just one paragraph on a web page?
Alt+click a paragraph and the translation appears under it, with the original left untouched.
Read the answer -
Can I import an SRT file and study it as text?
The reader imports .srt, .vtt, .txt and .md, strips subtitle timing, and gives you a bilingual text with clickable words.
Read the answer -
Can I translate text I select on any web page?
Select text anywhere for the two-line box; right-click instead on pages where an extension cannot run a script.
Read the answer -
Why can NoaLingua not open a PDF stored on my computer?
Turn on "Allow access to file URLs" for NoaLingua in chrome://extensions. Chrome gives extensions no way to ask for it.
Read the answer -
Can I save a phrase or collocation rather than a single word?
Drag across words to look up a phrase, and fixed expressions are saved as their own cards alongside the word.
Read the answer -
How many words do I know in the language I am learning?
It counts unique words rather than cards or forms, and it counts what you met — it does not estimate a total from a test.
Read the answer -
Which words should I learn next?
Learn these next ranks twenty words by how many of your own videos they appear in, not by a generic frequency list.
Read the answer -
Can I see how many times I have encountered a word?
Three counts per card — met, clicked, practised — kept raw, with no score derived from them.
Read the answer -
Is there spaced repetition that does not make me rate every card?
Games schedule cards on a fixed 1-3-7-14-30-90-180 ladder, and a miss drops two rungs instead of resetting to zero.
Read the answer -
Can I practise fill-in-the-blank exercises with my own sentences?
Cloze exercises are cut from sentences you saved yourself, so the context is one you have already heard.
Read the answer -
Can I do dictation practice with YouTube videos?
Two dictation formats: type back a sentence you saved, or type the missing line from a real clip.
Read the answer -
Can I practise grammar with the sentences I saved?
Six grammar formats — form, tense, preposition, article, what the form means, and find the mistake — all drawn from your own material.
Read the answer -
How do I learn der, die, das — or le and la?
Gender is drilled on the nouns you met yourself, with the sentence they came from, rather than from a fixed list.

Is there a daily vocabulary challenge?
Four challenges — daily, speed round, survival and vocabulary boss — each a session shape rather than a question type.

Does the streak break if I miss a day?
Two rest days in a rolling thirty-day window, said out loud, and the day counts from your first answer.
Read the answer -
How do I back up my vocabulary or move it to another computer?
One JSON file is the whole profile — settings, cards, schedule, streak — and importing it offers merge or replace.

Why did the extension stop working after an update?
Reload the page. An extension update orphans the script in tabs that were already open, and nothing else fixes it.
Read the answer -
Why were only some lines translated?
A daily cloud quota ran out. Add the provider email to raise it, or download the on-device model and stop using the cloud.
Read the answer -
Why is my language pack download stuck?
Downloads run one at a time, smallest first. A real stall fails and retries; the manual button skips the queue.

Why is speech recognition not working in Chrome?
Chrome supplies the speech model, not NoaLingua. The panel names which of the four causes applies.
