Answer
The four challenges, and what each one is for
Daily, speed, survival, and the one that only asks what you keep getting wrong
Four of them. The daily challenge is the same ten words all day, derived from the date rather than picked at random. Speed round is one minute. Survival ends at your first mistake. Vocabulary boss asks only about words that have given you trouble, hardest first.
Short answer Four challenges — daily, speed round, survival and vocabulary boss — each a session shape rather than a question type.
The detail behind the NoaLingua answer
Why the daily set comes from the date
The ten words are derived from the day rather than drawn at random. A challenge that changes when you refresh the page is not a daily challenge — it is a shuffle with a label on it, and everybody works that out within a week.
Deriving from the date also means the set is the same whenever you come back to it that day, so an interrupted attempt can be resumed rather than replaced.
What each of the other three is actually for
Speed round is one minute, and a missed word goes back into the queue rather than costing you anything — the clock is already the pressure, and adding a penalty on top produces caution, which is the opposite of what a speed drill is for.
Survival ends on the first mistake, which makes it the honest measure of what you can do without hesitating. Vocabulary boss takes only the words you have missed, hardest first. If nothing has given you trouble it says so — "Nothing has given you trouble yet…" — rather than quietly turning into an ordinary session, because a challenge that silently becomes something else is a broken promise.
How they differ from the twenty-six question types
A challenge is a shape of session, not a kind of question. They appear in the games drawer with a Play button rather than a checkbox, because they cannot mix into a session — they are the session.
The header shows which mode you are in, and while a challenge is running a Play mixed mode button appears there to get out of it. This exists because the first version had no obvious exit, which is the sort of thing that only shows up when somebody wants to leave.
More questions people ask NoaLingua
Do challenges count towards my streak?
Yes. The day is counted on your first answer rather than on a completed session, so an attempt you abandon halfway still counted as a day you studied.
Can I limit how long a session runs?
Yes. The budget control in the Learn header cycles through any length, two minutes, five and ten. The size of the queue decides how many cards go in; the clock decides when it ends.
Do challenges use the same schedule as normal practice?
They write into the same cards on the same ladder. A challenge is a different way of being asked, not a separate deck or a separate history.
