Answer
Dictation practice from the videos you actually watch
Write what you hear, from a real clip rather than a studio recording
Yes, two ways. Write what you hear replays a sentence you kept and asks you to type it — the hardest of the sentence exercises and the one that finds what you only half know. Missing subtitle goes further: it plays a real clip on the actual video page and asks for the line that is missing.
Short answer Two dictation formats: type back a sentence you saved, or type the missing line from a real clip.
Step by step
Doing it with NoaLingua
- 1
Save sentences while you watch
Press S to keep the whole sentence on screen, or save a word and the sentence comes with it. Where the real end of the sentence is known, the audio of it is captured too — so the dictation later uses the speaker's voice rather than a synthetic one.
- 2
Open Learn → My material → Sentences
Every sentence you kept, with where it came from. Each row offers five actions: Listen, Shadow, Rebuild, Write what you hear, and Watch — which sends you back to the exact second in the video.
- 3
Or play Missing subtitle from the games drawer
It has a Play button rather than a checkbox, because it needs real audio and a page that can play it. It opens its own surface on the actual YouTube tab instead of mixing into an ordinary session.

The detail behind the NoaLingua answer
Why the audio is sometimes the speaker and sometimes not
A sentence's audio is only captured when its true end is known, which on YouTube comes from the full transcript. Half a sentence is worse than none, because it would be cached and then trusted — so where the boundary is uncertain, nothing is recorded and the speech synthesiser reads the line instead.
When the real clip does exist, it is used by Listen, by Shadow, by Hear it again and by the dictation formats. That is a materially different exercise: real speech at real speed with real reductions, rather than a clean voice pronouncing every syllable.
What dictation finds that nothing else does
Multiple-choice hides the gap between recognising a word and knowing it. Typing what you heard does not: articles, agreement, the small function words that get swallowed at speed, and the difference between two words that sound almost identical all fail visibly.
That is also why it is uncomfortable and why it is worth doing in small amounts. The session budget control — any length, two minutes, five, ten — exists partly for this: a short session of the hard formats beats a long one of the easy ones.
More questions people ask NoaLingua
Does it check spelling exactly?
You are typing back a sentence you have heard, and the comparison is against that sentence. The point is the words and the forms, which is where the learning is.
Can I do this on Netflix material?
Sentences saved on Netflix are ordinary cards and practise normally. The formats needing a real clip on the original page are built around YouTube, where the timing of a sentence is known exactly.
What if I would rather speak than type?
Say it back is the speaking equivalent: the sentence plays, the video stops, you repeat it, and the words that did not pass come back marked in square brackets. Shadowing does the same without any scoring.
