Legal
Terms of use
NoaLingua is licensed for personal use on your own devices. It reads subtitles that a site already displays and does not bypass DRM, geographic restrictions or subscriptions. Much of what it does depends on third-party data and Chrome features that may change or become unavailable.
Your licence
You may install and use NoaLingua on devices you own or control, for personal language learning. You may not resell it, redistribute modified copies, or remove or circumvent the licensing mechanism.
Your saved vocabulary, settings and exported profile files are yours. We claim no rights over them, and they never leave your machine except through the specific actions described on the privacy page.
What NoaLingua explicitly does not do
Stated here as terms because these are commitments, not just descriptions:
- It does not bypass DRM.
- It does not bypass geographic restrictions or make regionally unavailable content available.
- It does not bypass subscriptions or paywalls of any kind.
- It does not download, copy or redistribute video content.
- It does not create subtitles where a site provides none — unless you explicitly enable on-device speech recognition, which is presented as a machine transcription rather than as a subtitle.
It reads the subtitle text a site has already displayed to you, in the region and on the plan you already have. You remain responsible for using it in accordance with the terms of the sites you visit.
Dependency disclaimer
A significant part of NoaLingua's behaviour depends on things outside our control, and it would be dishonest to promise them:
- Chrome's on-device translation and AI models. They belong to Chrome, may not exist on a given machine, and can change or be withdrawn between browser versions.
- Chrome's speech recognition packs. Availability varies by language and by device.
- Public dictionary and corpus data from Wiktionary, UniMorph, Tatoeba and others. Coverage varies by language and can change upstream.
- Optional cloud translation, which has its own daily quota set by the provider.
- The sites you use it on. A platform can change how it delivers subtitles at any time, and has no obligation to keep an extension working.
The coverage matrix and limits page describe the current state as accurately as we can, and are updated rather than quietly trimmed.
Acceptable use
Do not use NoaLingua to infringe copyright, to violate another service's terms, or to build a competing dataset by bulk-extracting the dictionary content it downloads. That data belongs to the projects credited on the data sources page and is redistributed under their licences.
Payment
Purchases are processed by Paddle acting as Merchant of Record. Paddle is the seller on your receipt and handles VAT and sales tax. Paddle's own terms apply to the transaction itself. Refunds are covered on the refunds page.
Liability
NoaLingua is provided as-is. It is a language-learning aid, and its translations, grammar data and speech scoring can be wrong — the product says so in the places where it matters. Do not rely on it for anything consequential, such as legal, medical or safety-critical translation.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, liability is limited to the amount you paid in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, and your statutory rights as a consumer are unaffected.
Changes to these terms
Material changes will be dated on this page. The date at the foot of the page is the last revision.
