28 languages, and exactly what works in each

NoaLingua offers 28 languages in its learning and translation selectors. Support is not one thing: a language can have conjugation tables and no frequency list, or definitions and no punctuation model. The matrix below shows all ten capabilities per language, and marks anything we have not verified as "not documented" rather than guessing.

“Supported” is several independent capabilities, not one Seven separate capability bars for French, which do not combine into a single score. Example sentences, definitions and IPA, uncommon-word highlighting, and punctuation repair are all documented as present. Grammar tables are partial: the dataset contains verb forms only, with no nouns or adjectives. On-device translation and speech recognition are not documented, because both depend on data Chrome owns and does not publish per language. A language is therefore never simply supported or unsupported. This is why there is a matrix rather than a flag grid. French has real example sentences and a full dictionary, grammar tables that cover verbs and nothing else, and two capabilities we cannot verify because Chrome owns the data. “Does it support French” has no useful yes-or-no answer — so the site gives all seven, per language, and marks the unverified ones as unverified.

How to read this

Why we publish the gaps

A flag grid would be easier to build and would tell you nothing. The honest version is that 51% of this table is verified from the extension's own registries — every entry of which was checked against the real service, not copied from a standard — and the rest is marked as unverified.

Where the data comes from

Grammar tables come from UniMorph, definitions and IPA from Wiktionary via kaikki, example sentences from Tatoeba, and the frequency lists are bundled in the extension itself. Each of those registries was probed against the live service — a 404 is recorded as a documented “no”, not as an unknown.

What we may never be able to fill

Four columns — Chrome on-device translation, cloud translation, the offline word dictionary and Chrome speech packs — depend on data Chrome or a third party owns and does not publish per language. Those cells may stay “not documented” permanently, and saying so is more useful than a confident guess.

Per-language detail

Languages with their own page

18 of the 28 have enough verified coverage and enough language-specific detail to justify a page of their own. The other 10 stay rows in the matrix — padding them into pages would produce 10 near-identical pages that help nobody.

One number we will not print The handbook’s own heading says “Supported languages (30)”, and then lists 28. The extension’s language registry contains exactly 28. We publish 28, because that is what the code actually offers — and we mention the discrepancy rather than quietly picking the bigger number.

Common questions

Is my language supported?

28 languages appear in the learning and translation selectors. But "supported" is layered — check the row for your language in the matrix, because a language can have grammar tables and no frequency list, or definitions and no punctuation model.

What does "not documented" mean?

It means we have not verified that capability ourselves, so we will not claim it either way. It is not the same as "no". Four of the ten columns depend on data Chrome owns rather than data we ship, so some of those cells may never be fillable by us.

Why does Serbian have no on-device translation?

Chrome has no on-device translation model for the English–Serbian pair at all — it is unavailable, not merely undownloaded. That is exactly why the extension keeps YouTube's own caption translation as a fallback, and Serbian is one of the languages that fallback explicitly covers.

Why is the English dictionary pack so much bigger than the others?

The English Wiktionary extract is 475 MB against 54 MB for French and 145 MB for Chinese. English simply has far more dictionary entries with far more senses. It is the clearest example of what local-first costs in disk space, which is why the size is printed rather than hidden.

Can I learn a language that is not on the list?

Not through the language selectors. The list is deliberately broader than what Chrome's on-device translator supports, because the fallback chain degrades an unsupported pair to an honest message rather than a silent failure — but a language absent from the list has no packs, no selector entry and no support.
