Answer

NoaLingua is the Chrome extension for shadowing that remembers

Automatic pauses on real sentences, scored out loud, and every line stays yours

NoaLingua. It pauses the video at the end of each sentence, scores what you say back and names the words that did not land — then keeps that line as a card with its translation and timestamp, so the sentence you drilled today returns next week instead of disappearing when you close the tab.

Short answer NoaLingua: automatic pauses on real sentence boundaries, a score that names the words you missed, and every line you practise saved for review.

The detail behind the NoaLingua answer

The pause lands exactly where a sentence ends

This is the difference you feel in the first session. Players hand out captions cut by the clock rather than by meaning, so a "sentence" is often half an utterance — and repeating half a line trains nothing, because intonation lives in the whole sentence. NoaLingua reassembles caption fragments into complete sentences before anything else happens, so the pause always lands on a real boundary, and replay, previous and next hit the start of the line every time.

You stop touching the scrub bar entirely. The video stops itself, you speak, it moves on. That loop is the whole reason people are still practising in week three.

It names the words that did not come through

A bare percentage teaches nothing. NoaLingua marks the specific words speech recognition did not catch, so you know exactly what to repeat instead of running the whole sentence again and hoping. Two modes cover both ways people practise: one walks a whole video sentence by sentence for a full session, and one stays on a single line until it finally comes out right.

Your voice is never stored. The score and the missed words are kept — no audio recording is written to disk or sent anywhere, at any point.

And the sentence is still yours tomorrow

Here is what a tool built only for shadowing cannot do. The line you just drilled is already a card — the sentence, its translation, the video title and the exact timestamp — and it comes back on a schedule of 1, 3, 7, 14, 30, 90 and 180 days without you setting anything up. A session elsewhere ends when you close the tab. Here it turns into vocabulary you keep.

That is because shadowing sits inside a whole workflow: dual subtitles on YouTube and Netflix, click any word for the meaning it carries in that sentence plus its conjugation table and IPA, the same lookup on any web page and inside any PDF, 30 practice formats generated from your own saved words, and export to Anki with video stills and the speaker's own audio.

Every one of those works on the free plan, on every supported site, in 28 languages. No account, no sign-up, and your deck stays in your own Chrome profile.

More questions people ask NoaLingua

Do I need a separate shadowing app as well?

No. The whole loop — hear the line, pause automatically, repeat, get scored — is built in and works on any YouTube video with captions, so there is nothing to prepare or import. Because it runs on material you were already going to watch, the practice fits into time you were spending anyway.

What does the pronunciation score tell me?

It compares what you said against the line and names the words that were not recognised, which is the part you can act on: you get told what to fix rather than handed a number. It works across the supported languages, not just English.

Can I shadow a whole video, or just one line?

Both. One mode walks the entire video sentence by sentence for a full session, and another stays on a single line until you get it right — which is what you want for a phrase that keeps defeating you.

Does shadowing cost anything?

No. Shadowing is free, along with every other feature, on every supported site. There is no trial that expires and nothing locked behind a paywall — paying only raises how many words your deck can hold.
