Answer

Saving words while you watch, with NoaLingua

One key, and the sentence and the moment come with it

Click the word in the subtitle line and press Save, or press S to keep the whole sentence. The card records the sentence, its translation, the video title and the exact timestamp at that instant — so the word is never separated from the moment you met it.

Short answer One keystroke. The context is captured at the same instant, not reconstructed afterwards.

Step by step

Doing it with NoaLingua

  1. 1

    Turn the subtitles on

The CC button in the player, or the c key. NoaLingua reads what the player is already showing; it does not create subtitles.

  2. 2

Click the word you do not know

The card opens with the meaning it has in this sentence, the grammar of the exact form you clicked, IPA and real examples.

  3. 3

Press Save, or press S for the whole sentence

Saving is instant. It does not wait for any lookup to finish, so a slow network never costs you the word.

  4. 4

Open Learn when something is due

The button in the page corner shows the number waiting, and the toolbar badge shows the same figure.

The detail behind the NoaLingua answer

Why saving does not wait for the lookup

Save writes the card immediately — sentence, translation, source, timestamp — without waiting for the dictionary, the grammar tables or the examples to return. Everything else arrives afterwards through three separate retries.

The alternative, blocking the save until every lookup returns, means losing the word every time a network call is slow. That is exactly when you are most likely to be watching something.

What the card remembers about where it came from

The sentence, its translation, the source title and URL, and the exact timestamp — and each separate encounter, oldest first. With more than one it says so: "Met 4 times, across 3 videos."

Where a frame was captured, the encounters render as a strip of thumbnails, and those same images travel into the Anki export.

More questions people ask NoaLingua

Does this work on Netflix too?

Yes. The word card, the dictionary, the grammar tables and Save are identical there. The card records the title and the moment exactly as it does on YouTube.

What if I want the whole sentence rather than one word?

Press S. The sentence is saved with its translation and the same source information, and you can still click individual words inside it later.

Can I save a phrase rather than a single word?

Drag across two or more words in the original line and release. A collocation cannot be understood word by word, because the meaning is in none of them individually.
