Answer
When you understand everything and can say nothing
The gap is normal, it has a cause, and it closes with a specific kind of practice
Because recognising a word and retrieving it are different skills, and input trains only the first. Months of watching can leave you understanding almost everything and producing almost nothing. The fix is production practice — saying sentences out loud, under time pressure, with feedback.
Short answer Normal, and not a sign you did it wrong. Input built recognition; speaking needs retrieval, which needs its own practice.
The detail behind the NoaLingua answer
Why the gap opens in the first place
Comprehension is recognition: the word arrives and you match it. Production is retrieval: you need the word and must find it with nothing to match against. The second is harder and is not trained by the first.
This is why the gap is widest for people who learned mostly by watching or reading. They did not do it wrong — they did half of it very well.
What closes it without a conversation partner
Shadowing is the cheapest form of production practice: the sentence plays, the video stops itself, and you repeat it in a pause deliberately longer than the sentence — because producing a sentence in a language you are learning takes longer than hearing it.
Say It Back adds the feedback half. It listens, writes out the words it heard in real time, gives you a percentage, and shows which words did not come through. The score and the missed words are kept; the audio never is.
More questions people ask NoaLingua
Do I need a microphone?
Not for shadowing. Ctrl+H needs no microphone and no speech pack at all — listen, pause, repeat. Only the scored mode listens.
Is my voice recorded?
Never. Scores and missed words are kept as numbers and text. If you enable online recognition, the audio goes to Chrome’s speech service for recognition and NoaLingua stores nothing.
Will this replace talking to a person?
No. It builds the retrieval speed that makes a conversation survivable, but there is no chat, no conversation partner and no tutor here. That is a real gap and a conversation assistant fills it better.
