Answer

Backing up and moving your vocabulary, without an account

One JSON file that holds the settings, the cards, the schedule and the streak

Export your profile. It is one JSON file holding your settings, every card with its review schedule, your streak, your bookmarks and your progress. Import it on the other machine and choose: merge and keep both, or replace everything. There is no account, because the file is the account.

Short answer One JSON file is the whole profile — settings, cards, schedule, streak — and importing it offers merge or replace.

Step by step

Doing it with NoaLingua

  1. 1

Settings → Privacy & data → Your profile, as a file

Export profile writes a single .json. It contains the settings, all cards with their scheduling state, the streak, bookmarks and progress.

  2. 2

Import it on the other machine

The import first shows you what is in the file — when it was exported, how many words, whether it carries settings — before anything is touched.

  3. 3

    Choose merge or replace

Merge — keep both keeps every word from both sides; where the same word exists in each, the more recently studied one wins. Replace everything deletes what is here first. The choice is explicit rather than inferred.

  4. 4

For flashcards specifically, use the exports

Settings → Vocabulary exports CSV for Anki, JSON for everything, a spreadsheet you can edit and re-import, and a real Anki package with the video images and the speaker's audio where those exist.

The detail behind the NoaLingua answer

Why a file rather than an account

A file works offline. It works in ten years. It ends up inside whatever backup you already run, without you configuring anything. And nobody can take it away from you, lose it, or change the terms under which you are allowed to have it.

What it does not do is sync silently between two machines you use on the same day. That is a real cost and it is the trade being made, rather than an oversight.

Settings sync is a separate, smaller thing

Sync settings with my Chrome profile uses Chrome's own sync — your Google account, not an account with us. It carries settings only, because Chrome allows roughly 8 KB per item and a deck exceeds that after a few dozen words. Words travel in the profile file above.

It is off by default, and turning it off again deletes what was left in Chrome's sync storage.

What import refuses, and how it says so

Three different refusals with three different messages: the file is not JSON, the profile came from a newer version, or it is not a NoaLingua profile at all. One generic failure message for three unrelated causes is a message that helps with none of them.

Import also adds and never silently overwrites: words you already have keep their own review history rather than being reset by an older copy of themselves.

More questions people ask NoaLingua

Is export limited on the free plan?

No. Export is free always — at the save limit, and for somebody who never pays. A record of your own work that you cannot take with you is not a record you own.

Does the export contain audio?

The Anki package with pictures carries the video frames and the real speaker audio where they exist, and tells you how many cards have each. The profile JSON carries the data rather than the media.

What if the local database is damaged?

Settings → Privacy & data has Repair local storage for "Internal error opening database". It rebuilds the database, which loses cards and downloaded packs — so export the profile first if you still can.
