Specific to French
Things that are only true here
- French UniMorph is verbs only. Measured at 367,732 rows, every one is V, V.PTCP or V.CVB — there is not a single noun or adjective in it.
- That is why the Wiktionary pack stops being optional for French: UniMorph carries just 7,536 lemmas and is missing être, faire, pouvoir, venir, prendre and voir.
- Clicking an elided form strips the elision automatically: clicking l’arbitrage looks up arbitrage — which matters most while reading dual subtitles, where you are clicking mid-sentence.
- Set expressions like en fait, avoir lieu and tout à fait get their own card alongside the word you clicked.
- The French Wiktionary pack is 54 MB — about a ninth of the English one.
Common questions
Does NoaLingua work for French?
French is one of the 28 languages in the learning and translation selectors, and 5 of its ten capability axes are verified. The table on this page shows exactly which ones — including the ones that are documented as absent.
Can I get grammar tables for French?
Yes. 13 MB · verbs only — V, V.PTCP and V.CVB, and nothing else Conjugation and declension tables open at the exact form you clicked.
Does French work offline?
Yes, once the packs finish downloading. Expect to leave the extension running 15 to 30 minutes after choosing your languages.
What does “not documented” mean in the table?
That we have not verified it ourselves, so we will not claim it either way. It is not the same as “no”. Several of those columns depend on data Chrome owns and does not publish per language.
