# Practical language tutorials — NoaLingua

In short

Turn a video, article or vocabulary list into a focused study session. These NoaLingua guides explain the controls, a concrete exercise, common mistakes and a way to check what you learned.

## Version and availability

These instructions cover newer NoaLingua builds checked against the implementation on 11 October 2026. The public Chrome Web Store listing checked that day still showed 0.2.53. A control described here may therefore not be available in your installed version yet. Check the required version below; the exercise can also be practised manually.

## Listening and speaking

- [YouTube dictation practice](https://noalingua.com/tutorials/youtube-dictation/)Use a short YouTube caption line to test what you actually hear. NoaLingua dictation hides the text, pauses for your answer and compares the words after you submit.
- [Listen before reading subtitles](https://noalingua.com/tutorials/listen-before-reading/)Use NoaLingua Listen first to separate hearing a sentence from reading it. Reveal the original before the translation so you can identify whether the difficulty is sound or meaning.
- [Skip silence during listening practice](https://noalingua.com/tutorials/skip-video-silences/)Concentrate a captioned-video session on speech by skipping long gaps. NoaLingua uses subtitle timing, so this works best when the caption track follows the spoken dialogue accurately.
- [From video dictation to speaking](https://noalingua.com/tutorials/video-to-speaking-routine/)Combine listening, dictation and spoken repetition around one short scene. Each pass tests something different: understanding the message, hearing the words and producing the sentence yourself.

## Video study projects

- [Make a YouTube practice book](https://noalingua.com/tutorials/youtube-practice-book/)Build exercises around one captioned video rather than an unrelated word list. A NoaLingua practice book combines selected vocabulary, sentence context and several ways to recall the material.
- [Print exercises from a YouTube video](https://noalingua.com/tutorials/print-video-exercises/)Take a video lesson onto paper with the practice book print view. Keep the answer sheet separate so the worksheet becomes a recall exercise rather than a copying task.
- [Put the transcript on a second screen](https://noalingua.com/tutorials/transcript-second-screen/)Separate the YouTube transcript from the video so you can follow a larger current sentence and browse nearby lines. This is useful for close reading, note-taking and replaying a passage.
- [Plan a week around one video](https://noalingua.com/tutorials/weekly-video-study-plan/)Reuse a short video across several study sessions instead of continually collecting new material. Combine listening, a practice book, speaking and scheduled vocabulary review with a clear finish point.
- [Learn German with ARD Mediathek](https://noalingua.com/tutorials/german-ard-mediathek/)Use an accessible ARD programme with German captions to combine listening, word lookup and retelling. NoaLingua reads the programme’s available subtitle track.
- [Learn German with ZDF subtitles](https://noalingua.com/tutorials/german-zdf-subtitles/)Study a ZDF or ZDFheute video through its German subtitle track. Use the same passage for comprehension, contextual vocabulary and spoken repetition.

## Subtitle files

- [Load your own YouTube subtitles](https://noalingua.com/tutorials/custom-youtube-subtitles/)Use an SRT or WebVTT file when you have a better caption track for the same YouTube video. NoaLingua can apply its word lookup and translation to that track.
- [Fix imported subtitle timing](https://noalingua.com/tutorials/fix-subtitle-timing/)Correct a constant delay in an imported YouTube subtitle file before using it for dictation or sentence replay. A timing offset moves the track; it cannot repair a differently edited video.
- [Export bilingual SRT subtitles](https://noalingua.com/tutorials/bilingual-srt-export/)Create a timed subtitle file for review in a compatible player or editor. NoaLingua offers original SRT and bilingual SRT, with the translated line underneath the original.
- [Add subtitles to a website video](https://noalingua.com/tutorials/custom-website-video-subtitles/)Use your own SRT or WebVTT track on a video page outside YouTube. The newer generic-video import connects timed text, translation and word cards.

## Vocabulary and Anki

- [Send vocabulary to Anki Desktop](https://noalingua.com/tutorials/anki-desktop-send/)Move saved NoaLingua cards directly into a desktop Anki deck. This connection adds notes locally; it does not replace a full profile backup or provide two-way synchronization.
- [Save new words straight to Anki](https://noalingua.com/tutorials/automatic-anki-saving/)Combine word lookup with Anki review without repeatedly exporting a file. After the desktop connection is configured, send a saved card individually or enable automatic sending.
- [Import words you already know](https://noalingua.com/tutorials/import-known-words/)Tell NoaLingua about vocabulary you already recognize before choosing what to study next. Importing known words helps prevent familiar items from becoming unnecessary review tasks.
- [Clear a vocabulary review backlog](https://noalingua.com/tutorials/review-backlog/)Restart a neglected vocabulary deck with a manageable daily workload. NoaLingua can pause new words while you work through existing reviews and limit how many cards you study today.
- [Choose vocabulary by frequency rank](https://noalingua.com/tutorials/word-frequency-rank/)Use frequency information to prioritize useful saved words without treating a number as a complete learning plan. NoaLingua shows ranks from its supported subtitle-frequency lists.

## Reading and translation

- [Read articles in a bilingual reader](https://noalingua.com/tutorials/article-bilingual-reader/)Move a readable web article into NoaLingua’s bilingual reader for focused paragraph study. Keep the original nearby, inspect unfamiliar words and return later to your reading position.
- [Translate an article paragraph by paragraph](https://noalingua.com/tutorials/paragraph-page-translation/)Keep an article in its original layout while adding translations below its paragraphs. This suits close reading when the page itself is useful and a separate reader would interrupt your work.
- [Review saved words while browsing](https://noalingua.com/tutorials/vocabulary-word-swap/)Re-encounter your own saved vocabulary while reading pages in your familiar language. NoaLingua’s optional word swapping introduces a small number of deck words into ordinary reading.
- [Turn news reading into vocabulary practice](https://noalingua.com/tutorials/news-to-vocabulary-routine/)Connect an article, a small vocabulary selection and later recall. The bilingual reader and optional word swapping can give the same words more than one meaningful encounter.
- [Set up Chrome’s offline translator](https://noalingua.com/tutorials/chrome-offline-translator-setup/)When an online translation allowance ends, check whether Chrome supports an on-device model for your chosen pair. Downloading that model can provide translation without the online quota.
