# Target language subtitles for learning: make sound meet spelling

Same-language captions reveal words that were already present in the audio. Translation should answer a gap, not run the session.

Set the original-language caption as the main line and keep translation hidden or visually secondary. With NoaLingua, listen once, read the target caption to locate missed sounds, then replay without relying on the second line. Reveal translation only when the meaning still blocks the scene, and save phrases you can reconnect to audio.

Why it fits

## Why NoaLingua is our recommendation here

We make it, so the useful test is whether these capabilities match this exact job.

- Two subtitle lines can stay aligned while the target language remains visually primary.
- One-click hiding lets the support line disappear for a real final listening attempt.
- Sentence replay, auto-pause and speed controls expose reductions without losing the scene.
- Timestamped saves can return as listening and speaking practice, not just written flashcards.

## Choose material that will pay you back

**Use**
Captioned YouTube or Netflix material where the original subtitle closely matches clear speech.

**Why**
Accurate same-language text builds the link between known written forms and sounds that disappeared in normal speech.

**Skip**
Dubbed audio paired with captions written for another track; the mismatch teaches frustration rather than sound mapping.

## A path you can follow

- ### Listen before reading

Use the image and audio to predict the sentence before your eyes settle on captions.
- ### Read the target line

Identify which known word was reduced, linked or stressed differently from expectation.
- ### Reveal meaning only if needed

Use translation for a specific semantic gap rather than reading both lines automatically.
- ### Replay without support

Hide the translation and check whether sound now activates the sentence directly.
- ### Save sound-linked phrases

Keep lines whose audio you want to recognise again, with their timestamp attached.

## Where this path stops

Same-language captions may be paraphrased, delayed or generated inaccurately. NoaLingua does not create a reliable transcript where none exists, and a subtitle match does not guarantee full listening comprehension. Check important quotations against audio. Dedicated video support requires captions on YouTube or Netflix in desktop Chrome.

## Questions about target language subtitles for learning

Are target-language subtitles better than translated subtitles?

They are better for connecting sound and spelling. Translation remains useful as a brief meaning check when the target line is understood poorly.

When should I hide subtitles completely?

After one supported pass on a short section. A final audio-only replay tests whether the caption actually improved listening.

What if the subtitle does not match the audio?

Do not force word-for-word study. Use another caption track or source when the mismatch is frequent.
