# How to learn English

A daily plan for listening, vocabulary, pronunciation and real conversation

In short

Learn English by combining understandable listening and reading with short, frequent speaking. Build vocabulary from sentences you actually meet, review it over time, and use grammar to explain patterns after you have seen them in context. A repeatable thirty-minute routine beats occasional long study sessions.

## What to focus on in English

### Connected speech

Train with whole sentences. English sounds change when words join, so isolated pronunciation practice does not fully prepare you for real speech.

### High-frequency phrases

Save useful chunks such as “I was about to” or “it depends on” instead of collecting only single words.

### One clear model

Choose a consistent pronunciation model at first. You can understand many accents without trying to imitate all of them.

## A four-step daily plan

- 1

### Listen for meaning

Watch five to ten minutes with English captions and follow the message before stopping.
- 2

### Read and notice

Read the transcript, look up only the words that block understanding, and save useful sentences.
- 3

### Repeat aloud

Shadow two or three short lines, then change one detail to make the sentence your own.
- 4

### Review tomorrow

Recall the meaning before revealing it. Keep difficult cards; retire words you already know.

## Advice from experienced polyglots

These are distinct methods, not universal laws. Test them against your level and keep the parts that make you return to English tomorrow.

### Use understandable input

Steve Kaufmann’s input-first approach centres on reading and listening to material you can mostly follow.

### Speak before you feel ready

Benny Lewis recommends preparing a small first conversation and using it early instead of waiting for perfect grammar.

### Follow a story

Olly Richards advises reading at your level and following the plot instead of interrupting every line for a lookup.

### Compare both directions

Luca Lampariello uses parallel text and translation in both directions to expose gaps between recognition and production.

## How NoaLingua helps

NoaLingua connects the same learning loop across captioned video, web pages and PDFs. It supports the practice; it does not replace conversation, feedback or a structured course when you need one.

## English-learning questions, answered

How long does it take to learn English?

It depends on your starting language, goal and weekly hours. Measure progress by tasks such as following a familiar video, holding a ten-minute conversation and writing a clear message, rather than by one promised deadline.

Should I study grammar first?

Learn enough grammar to recognise basic sentence patterns, then meet those patterns repeatedly in real input. Grammar is most useful when it explains something you have already noticed.

Can I learn English from Netflix or YouTube?

Yes, when the material is understandable and you actively replay, read and reuse short passages. Passive watching alone produces much slower progress.

How many words should I learn each day?

Choose a number you can still review next week. Five useful words in context are better than twenty isolated words that create an unmanageable queue.

How do I improve English pronunciation?

Copy short recordings, compare rhythm and stressed syllables, and record or test yourself. Work on being easy to understand before chasing a native-like accent.

When should I start speaking?

Start with prepared sentences as soon as you can, while continuing to build listening input. Early speaking reveals what you cannot yet retrieve.

Do subtitles help or hurt?

English subtitles help connect sound and spelling. Translation subtitles help with meaning but can capture all your attention, so hide them until you need them.

Can NoaLingua make me fluent?

No tool can guarantee fluency. NoaLingua helps you understand, save and practise real material; you still need sustained exposure and interaction with people.
