# Korean for beginners, with NoaLingua

The first month, in order, starting with a weekend that pays for itself

Spend the first weekend on Hangul — 14 consonants, 10 vowels, and how they stack into syllable blocks. Then read aloud daily, even words you do not understand. Weeks two to four go on sentence patterns and the first few hundred words, learned together rather than as lists.

## The beginner problem NoaLingua is built for

A Korean beginner’s bottleneck is not motivation, it is that real Korean is fast and shares almost no vocabulary with English, while beginner material is too slow to hold anyone’s interest for long. Most people solve this by staying on beginner material until they quit.

NoaLingua makes real material usable earlier. Both subtitle lines sit on screen at once, every word answers a click with the meaning it carries in that sentence, and the sentences you save come back on their own — so an episode that would have been above you becomes something you can work with in month two.

**Both lines, from the start**
The Korean line and your own together, so a sentence you could not decode becomes one you can read. The translation is a check on your guess rather than the thing you read.

**A click, not a dictionary**
Looking up a Korean verb means stripping the ending off first, which a beginner cannot reliably do. A click returns the dictionary form and the meaning in context together.

**Ten saves an episode**
Save the handful of words that genuinely blocked a sentence. They return on a spaced schedule with the scene attached.

## The weekend: Hangul, properly

Hangul is 24 letters — 14 consonants and 10 vowels — and it is widely considered the most learnable writing system in use. The consonant shapes were designed to resemble the position of the mouth that makes them, and the whole system is regular enough that most people can sound out words within a few hours of starting.

The one structural thing to understand is that Korean letters are not written in a line. They are grouped into square syllable blocks, each containing an initial consonant, a vowel and sometimes a final consonant. Once the block structure clicks, reading stops being decoding and starts being reading.

- Learn the vowels first — they are the axis the blocks are built around.
- Then the basic consonants, noticing which shapes are related to which.
- Learn how a block assembles: initial, vowel, optional final.
- Practise on shop signs, loanwords and food names, where you can check yourself.
- By Sunday evening, read a page aloud slowly. Comprehension is not the goal yet.

## Weeks two to four: patterns, not word lists

Korean word order puts the verb last and uses particles to mark what each noun is doing, so a list of nouns and verbs does not assemble into a sentence the way it might in Spanish. The productive unit for a beginner is the pattern — a short frame with a slot you can substitute words into.

Start with the polite ~요 level, because it is the register you can use with almost anyone without giving offence, and because it is what most teaching material and a good deal of television uses. Recognise the plain form when you meet it rather than trying to avoid it; you will hear it constantly.

**Particles do the work of word order**
은/는, 이/가, 을/를, 에, 에서. A handful of particles carries most ordinary sentences, and meeting them repeatedly beats memorising the distinctions.

**Verbs come last, always**
The sentence does not resolve until its final word, which is uncomfortable at first and quickly becomes normal. Reading whole lines rather than word by word is what fixes it.

**Numbers: there are two systems**
Native Korean and Sino-Korean numbers are used for different things. It is genuinely annoying, it is unavoidable, and it is best learned by use case rather than as two lists.

## What not to buy in month one

A full grammar reference and a course promising fluency on a timeline. The reference is not wrong, it is premature — it works when you have sentences to attach rules to, and in week two you have none. The timeline is a number the FSI’s own data does not support for a Category IV language.

What is worth having in month one costs nothing: a Hangul chart, one drama you actually want to watch, a frequency list, and something that stops the words you meet from evaporating. That is the entire kit for the first month.

## What the evidence says

Each of these has a source and a date. Where we could not find one, the claim is not here.

**Hangul is an alphabet of 24 letters — 14 consonants and 10 vowels — written in syllable blocks.**
It is the reason a weekend is a realistic target for reading, and the reason romanisation is a bad trade in Korean specifically. Standard descriptions of the Korean writing system, checked 2026-08-26

**Korean is FSI Category IV — about 2,200 class hours to General Professional Proficiency.**
A beginner should expect the alphabet to be fast and everything after it to be slow. That contrast is the defining feature of the language’s first year. ## From people who have done it

- Learners acquire a language by understanding messages slightly beyond their current level, not by studying the rules of the language first. **Stephen Krashen** Linguist; the Input Hypothesis underpins comprehensible-input teaching [The Input Hypothesis, summarised on our glossary page](https://noalingua.com/glossary/comprehensible-input/)

## Common questions about NoaLingua

How long does Hangul take?

A weekend to read slowly, and a few weeks of daily reading to read comfortably. It is the fastest meaningful milestone in any of the hard languages.

Should I use romanised Korean at first?

No. Romanisation misrepresents several Korean sounds and becomes a habit that is expensive to break, and Hangul is fast enough that there is nothing to gain by delaying it.

When can I start watching K-dramas for learning?

Month two, with both subtitle lines on, and expect it to be hard. Watching for enjoyment can start whenever you like — it just is not the same activity.

Which politeness level should a beginner learn?

The polite ~요 form. It is usable with almost anyone without giving offence, it is what most material uses, and it gives you a base to add the other registers onto later.
