# Learning German with NoaLingua

Method, evidence and honest timelines

German is Category II on the US Foreign Service Institute's scale, which puts it at about 900 class hours to professional proficiency. These articles cover how to start, what to skip, and how to turn the material you already watch and read into practice.

Four cases, three genders, and a reputation worse than the reality. The grammar front-loads the pain; the vocabulary is closer to English than almost any other language you could pick.

The [Foreign Service Institute](https://www.state.gov/foreign-service-institute/foreign-language-training/) puts German at **Category II** — about 900 class hours of classroom instruction, or about 36 weeks full time, to reach General Professional Proficiency. That is a real number from an organisation that has been measuring it since 1947, and it is the honest frame for everything below.
