# The intermediate plateau, and how NoaLingua gets you past it

The intermediate plateau is mostly a vocabulary problem

The intermediate plateau happens because the first few thousand words are everywhere and the next ten thousand are not. Each new word appears too rarely to be acquired by exposure alone, so progress that used to arrive by watching now requires deliberate capture. It is an arithmetic problem, not a talent one.

## Why the early months feel fast

Word frequency in every language is extraordinarily uneven. The most common thousand words account for something like eighty per cent of everything said in an ordinary day, which is why the first months of study feel like flying: almost every word you learn is one you will meet again within hours, and repetition does the work for you.

The next several thousand words behave completely differently. A word ranked ten thousandth might appear once in a novel. You will meet it, understand it from context, feel that you have learned it, and not see it again for six weeks — by which time it is gone. Nothing has changed about your ability. The material changed.

## The plateau is what exposure alone gets you

This is why people stall at exactly the point where they can follow most of a conversation and read most of an article. They have collected everything that frequency hands over for free, and the strategy that got them there — consume a lot, look things up occasionally — has run out of road.

The tell is specific: comprehension is fine and production is not. You understand the word when you see it and cannot produce it when you need it, which is the difference between recognition and retrieval and the reason [re-reading feels like studying](https://noalingua.com/blog/why-you-forget-vocabulary/) without being it.

## What changes on the other side

Three things, and none of them is working harder.

**Capture stops being optional**
Below the plateau you could rely on meeting a word again. Above it you cannot. Anything you want to keep has to be recorded at the moment you meet it, because that moment may not recur for a month.

**Material has to get narrower, not harder**
Vocabulary clusters by domain. Reading widely at this level spreads you across many rare words that share nothing; reading deeply in one area gives you the same specialist words repeatedly, which is the repetition frequency no longer provides.

**Production has to be practised on purpose**
Recognition keeps growing on its own. Retrieval does not, and retrieval is what the plateau is made of.

## What to actually change

The mechanical version of the above, in the order that returns the most.

- Pick a domain and stay in it for a month — one show, one author, one subject. The words will repeat because the subject does.
- Capture every word you look up, with the sentence it appeared in. A bare pair is a translation exercise; a sentence is a memory with handles on it.
- Review by retrieval, on a schedule you do not choose yourself. The interval that feels right is almost always far too short.
- Check what you are reading against your own vocabulary rather than against a level label. [Highlighting the words your deck has never met](https://noalingua.com/features/learn-from-websites/) tells you what an article will cost before you commit to it.
- Accept that the curve is flatter here. Ten thousand words is not ten times one thousand words of work; it is more, and knowing that is what stops people quitting at the exact point the work starts paying.

## What NoaLingua does about the plateau

The plateau in this article is a measurement problem: everything feels the same because nothing is telling you which words are failing, or in what way. NoaLingua keeps that record deliberately, and keeps it as raw numbers rather than a score that hides the detail you need.

What it remembers is specific enough to act on, which is the difference between knowing that you are stuck and knowing where.

**Stuck words, as their own view**
*My material* keeps a separate view of the words that are not moving, alongside search by the word, by its meaning, or by the sentence you met it in.

**Wrong in which way**
Misses are recorded by question type, meaning, production, grammar and listening, so a session can aim at the weakest one instead of reshuffling everything evenly.

**Where the next words come from**
The *Learn these next* list is built from which words appeared in which videos and how often. Numbers only, never a transcript.
