Answer

# Which words to learn next, chosen from what you watch

Twenty words ranked by how much of your own material they would open up

Settings → Study has a card called Learn these next: twenty words ranked first by how many of the videos you have actually watched they occur in, then by general frequency. It also states what share of the unknown words in your own material those twenty would cover.

Short answer Learn these next ranks twenty words by how many of your own videos they appear in, not by a generic frequency list.

Step by step

## Doing it with NoaLingua

- 1

### Open Settings → Study

The Learn these next card sits with the other five: today's progress, the last thirty days, how it is going, your videos, and bookmarked moments.
- 2

### Read the coverage line

It says what percentage of the unknown words across your material those twenty would account for. That number is what turns a list into a decision — twenty words covering a fifth of what you cannot follow is worth an evening.
- 3

### Save the ones you want

Each is a chip that opens the ordinary word card, so you get the meaning, the grammar and real examples before deciding to keep it. Nothing is added to your deck without you.

Ranking by how many of your own videos a word appears in fixes that. If you watch cooking videos in Italian, the words that unlock cooking videos in Italian rise to the top, and they do so without anybody having to build a themed word list.

### What is stored to make this work, and what is not

Which words appeared in which video, and how many times. Numbers only — no transcript, no video text, nothing about what was said. That count is what the ranking is computed from and it never leaves your machine.

The same mechanism is deliberately narrow elsewhere too: the per-word encounter counters only increment for words already in your deck. Every other word on screen is compared and discarded rather than recorded.

### The other place this appears

The transcript panel does the same job for a single video before you watch it: the words you have never met, ranked by how often they occur in that video, each a chip that opens the word card. Learning three of them first can change a video from exhausting to followable.

The guided course answers a different version of the question — what is worth knowing regardless of what you watch — by working through frequency bands from A1 to C1. The two are complementary rather than alternatives.

## More questions people ask NoaLingua

Does it work before I have watched much?

It needs material to rank against, so early on it is thin. That is when the guided course and a frequency list are the better answer, and the list becomes more useful the more you watch.

Does it recommend words I have marked as known?

No. Known words are excluded from what it counts as unknown, which is also why marking words known is worth doing rather than being a cosmetic gesture.

Can I see which videos a word came from?

Once a word is saved, its card keeps every encounter — the sentence, its translation, the video title and the exact moment — and reads "Met 4 times, across 3 videos" when there is more than one.
