Answer

# How to enable dual subtitles on YouTube with NoaLingua

Turn captions on, and a second language appears under them

YouTube has no dual-subtitle setting, so an extension adds the second line. Install it, open a video that has captions, and press the CC button — the original stays where it is and a translation appears underneath. Because YouTube hands over the whole caption track at once, the translation is usually ready well ahead of you.

Short answer Install the extension, press CC on a video that has captions, and the second language appears underneath.

Step by step

## Doing it with NoaLingua

- 1

### Add NoaLingua to Chrome

Free, no account, Chrome 138 or newer.
- 2

### Choose the language you are learning, and your own

Two dropdowns. Packs begin downloading immediately and in the background.
- 3

### Open a video that has captions and press CC

Or the c key. Auto-generated captions count — the extension rebuilds them into whole sentences first.
- 4

### Read both lines, and click anything you do not know

One click gives the meaning in that sentence, the dictionary form, the conjugation table and real examples. Save keeps the sentence and the timestamp.

Netflix exposes no such file, so none of those three are possible there — for anybody, not just for us. If you have a choice of platform for study, YouTube is the one that gives a tool more to work with.

### Captions are fragments; sentences are what you want

YouTube caption tracks are timed in fragments sized for the screen, not for grammar, so a single sentence is routinely split across three cues and a cue routinely holds the end of one sentence and the start of the next. Translating a fragment produces a translation of a fragment.

So the caption blocks are reassembled into whole sentences before anything is translated. That is also what makes replay useful: pressing back lands you at the beginning of a sentence rather than four words into the previous one.

## More questions people ask NoaLingua

Does it work with auto-generated captions?

Yes. Auto-generated tracks arrive without punctuation, so a punctuation model restores sentence boundaries before the text is grouped and translated. Quality follows the quality of the underlying transcript.

Can I export the whole video as a bilingual document?

On YouTube, yes — the entire caption track is available at once, so the full script can be exported with an honest count of what was captured. On Netflix this is impossible for any tool.

Does this work on the YouTube mobile app?

No. A Chrome extension runs in a desktop browser only. There is no mobile version, and no Firefox or Safari build today.
