# Can ChatGPT translate YouTube videos? NoaLingua answers

Not in the player — and that distinction decides which tool you want

Not while you watch. ChatGPT is not inside the YouTube player, so it cannot add a second subtitle line under the first, follow playback or pause on a line. It can translate a transcript you paste, which is a different job: reading afterwards rather than watching now.

Short answer It can translate a transcript you hand it. It cannot put a translation under the subtitles while the video plays, because it is not in the page.

So the question is not really about translation quality. Both approaches translate well enough. The question is whether you want to watch with support, or read afterwards with a translated document. Those are different activities and they suit different material.

### What the transcript route actually gets you

Copying a transcript into a chat window and asking for a translation works, and for some material it is the better choice — a lecture you want to study in depth, or a video whose subtitles you want as prose rather than as timed lines. You get a clean document you can read at your own pace.

What you lose is everything tied to time. The translation is no longer aligned to what is being said as it is said, you cannot click a word and get the meaning it carries in that line, and there is no record of which words you did not know. You also do the copying by hand for every video.

Long videos are the other friction. A feature-length transcript is a large amount of text to move through a chat window, and the result is a wall of prose with the timing stripped out.

### What an in-page tool does instead

NoaLingua runs in the tab, so the second language appears under the original as the line is spoken, grouped into sentences rather than into the raw caption chunks YouTube ships. Any word is clickable for the meaning it has in that sentence, and saving one keeps the sentence it came from.

It also exports, which is the closest thing to the transcript route: a whole video as a bilingual PDF or a plain text file, with timestamps, original and translation. The finished message reports how many lines actually translated rather than implying all of them did.

The honest limit is that this is Chrome on the desktop. There is no mobile app and no Firefox or Safari build, so none of it applies on a phone or a television. If that is where you watch, the transcript route is genuinely the one available to you.

## More questions people ask NoaLingua

Can ChatGPT watch a video if I give it the link?

Behaviour around links changes between releases, so check what your version does rather than trusting any page about it. What does not change is the structural point: even when it can read a page, it is not rendering into the player, so it cannot place a subtitle line or follow playback.

Is the translation better from a chat assistant?

Often it is more fluent across a whole paragraph, because it sees more context at once than a line-by-line translation does. For learning, that advantage is smaller than it sounds: you usually want to know what this line means as it is spoken, not the most elegant rendering of the passage.

What about videos with no subtitles at all?

Neither approach conjures them. A tool can only work with what a transcript or caption track provides, and NoaLingua reads subtitles a site already displays rather than creating them. If nothing exists for a video, speech recognition is the separate problem to solve first.
