# About NoaLingua, and who builds it

Who builds this, and why it works the way it does

NoaLingua is made by Nemanja Pejić at NoaSolutions, a single-person project rather than a company with a support desk. That constraint shapes the product: almost nothing runs on our side, so no subscription is needed to fund it, and there is no marketing team to smooth the limits away.

## Who

NoaLingua is built by [Nemanja Pejić](https://noalingua.com/authors/nemanja-pejic/), trading as [NoaSolutions](https://noasolutions.org). One person, writing the extension, this website and the documentation.

It began from an ordinary problem: watching video in a language you are learning feels productive and frequently teaches nothing, because reading a translation is not the same act as retrieving a word. The product is built around closing that gap — which is why saving a word keeps the sentence it came from, and why the review schedule exists at all.

## Why local-first

Every dictionary lookup, grammar table and example sentence could have been a request to a server. That would have been easier to build, and it would have created a permanent running cost, which turns into a subscription you cannot leave without losing your work.

Downloading the data to your machine instead has a real cost: the English dictionary pack is 475 MB, and there is a wait before everything is instant. In exchange there is no account, nothing to log into, nothing that stops working when a service is switched off, and a lifetime plan that is honest rather than a bet on how long we last.

## Why the site publishes its own limits

Partly ethics, partly arithmetic. A limitation you discover yourself after paying feels like being misled. The same limitation stated in advance is a trade-off you accepted.

The site is built so this is enforced rather than merely intended. Every fact is stored with a source and a verification date. A feature page without a limits block fails the build. A comparison without a row where the competitor wins fails too. Those are tests, not good intentions.

## Where the product honestly is

Version 0.2.36, and still early. On 10 September 2026, the [official Chrome Web Store listing](https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/ocimolffhgpeeoifjpjhgikgfbnmlkdh) showed 115 users and 5 ratings averaging 5.0 out of 5. Those are literal, dated store numbers, not a testimonial or a claim that a small sample represents everybody who uses it.

## Whose data it uses

The linguistic content is not ours. Definitions come from Wiktionary, examples from Tatoeba, grammar from UniMorph, and the frequency lists from an open dataset — all credited, with their licences, on [the data sources page](https://noalingua.com/data-sources/).
